Liability coverage included with every rental

Illinois requires rental companies to keep liability insurance or a bond on file with the state for the vehicles they rent, and your rental includes that coverage. It helps pay for injuries to other people and damage to their property that you are legally responsible for, up to the limits the law requires. It does not cover damage to the rental vehicle, your own injuries or your belongings. The rental agreement explains how this coverage works together with your own auto insurance.

Damage to the rental vehicle

We do not currently sell a damage waiver. If the vehicle is damaged or stolen during your rental, you are responsible as our Damage Policy explains. Your own insurance or card benefits may cover some or all of that cost.

Your own auto insurance

Many personal auto policies extend liability and physical damage coverage to rental vehicles in the United States. Before you rent, ask your insurer:

  • Does my policy cover rental vehicles, including the type I am renting (car, SUV, truck or van)?
  • What is my deductible?
  • Does it cover charges a rental company can make after damage or theft?
  • Does it cover business use, if you are traveling for work?

Credit card benefits

Many cards include rental vehicle damage coverage when you pay for the rental with that card. These benefits often pay only after your own insurance and may exclude trucks, large vans, luxury or high-performance vehicles and rentals longer than a set number of days. Check the terms with your card issuer before you rent.

Roadside help

Use Roadside assistance on your rental page in your account whenever you need help. Mechanical breakdowns are on us. The optional roadside assistance plan covers lockouts, flat tires, jump starts and towing to our nearest location; without it, these services are billed at cost.

When coverage may not apply

Coverage may not apply when the vehicle is used in a way the rental agreement does not allow. Examples: the driver is not named on the agreement, drives under the influence, races or uses the vehicle to push or tow, carries people or goods for pay, or drives outside the permitted area. The same goes for intentional or criminal acts and rentals obtained with false information. In these cases you may be responsible for all resulting costs.
