Rental Terms
The main rules for every rental, from reservation and pickup to the day you bring the vehicle back.

Your reservation
You reserve a specific vehicle, not just a vehicle class. If it becomes unavailable because of damage or a mechanical problem, we offer you a comparable or better vehicle at no extra cost. If none suits you, you can cancel for a full refund.
The price shown at checkout includes the rental, required fees and taxes for your dates. Optional extras are charged only if you choose them.
Who can rent and drive
The main driver must be at least 21 (25 for some vehicles), hold a valid driver's license and complete identity verification before pickup. Only drivers named on the rental agreement may drive, and each additional driver must meet the same requirements. See our Driver Requirements and Age Requirements.
Payment and deposit
The rental total is charged when you book, unless your confirmation says you pay at pickup. At pickup we place a security deposit hold on the main driver's credit or debit card: $250 for drivers 25 and older, $500 for drivers under 25, or $100 for drivers 25 and older who have completed 3 or more rentals with us with no damage reports. A few vehicles carry their own deposit, shown on the vehicle page. The deposit is never used for damage to the vehicle. See our Security Deposit Policy.
Pickup
Check in online before you arrive: verify your license, sign the rental agreement and pay. When your reservation includes contactless pickup and all three steps are done, instructions for finding the vehicle and its keys appear in your account 2 hours before pickup. Photograph the vehicle during check-in before you drive away, so its condition is on record.
If you chose delivery, we bring the vehicle to your address at the agreed time and record its condition with you at handover. The delivery fee is shown before you book.
Using the vehicle
You may not:
- let anyone who is not named on the rental agreement drive
- drive under the influence of alcohol, cannabis or any drug that affects driving
- carry passengers or goods for pay, including through rideshare or delivery apps
- race, speed test, give driving lessons or drive off paved roads
- tow or push anything, unless the vehicle has a tow package and we have approved it in writing
- carry hazardous materials or overload the vehicle
- use the vehicle for anything illegal
- smoke or vape in the vehicle
- rent, lend or hand the vehicle to anyone else
Where you can drive
You can drive anywhere in the 48 contiguous states. Trips into Canada need our written approval before you go. Driving into Mexico is not allowed.
Pets
Pets are welcome when they travel in a carrier or are safely secured. Bring the vehicle back free of pet hair and dirt, or a cleaning fee applies. Service animals are always welcome without a carrier, and we never charge a cleaning fee just because a service animal rode in the vehicle.
During your rental
If you need help during your rental, use Roadside assistance on your rental page in your account, or contact us with the details on your rental agreement. If the vehicle breaks down because of a mechanical fault, we arrange and pay for the help you need. Help needed for other reasons, such as a lockout, a lost key, a flat tire or running out of fuel or charge, is billed at cost unless you added the roadside assistance plan.
After an accident, call 911 if anyone is hurt. Call the police for any accident involving another vehicle, a person or property, and get the report number. Take photos and tell us as soon as you can, and no later than 24 hours afterwards.
If the vehicle is stolen, report it to the police within 24 hours of discovering the theft, send us the report number and return all keys to us.
Tolls, tickets and towing
Tolls are billed at cost: exactly what the toll authority charged, with no daily toll-pass fee and no administration fee. They appear on your receipt after the rental, sometimes a few weeks later.
You are responsible for parking tickets, camera tickets and other traffic violations during your rental. Where the issuing agency allows it, we transfer the ticket to your name so you can pay or contest it yourself. Otherwise we pay it and bill you the fine at cost.
If the vehicle is towed or impounded because of where it was parked or how it was used during your rental, you pay the towing, storage and release costs at cost.
Returning the vehicle
Return the vehicle to the agreed location at the agreed time, at the same fuel or charge level (see our Fuel and Charging Policy), with all keys, cables and equipment.
There is a 29-minute grace period. After that, late time is billed at $25 per hour, up to $150 for each 24 hours. If you need more time, extend your rental in your account before your return time to keep your normal rate.
Returning early does not reduce the price, and unused days are not refunded. To shorten a rental, change your dates online up to 24 hours before pickup.
If your location accepts after-hours returns, the vehicle remains your responsibility until we check it in.
Cleaning, smoking and lost items
Normal use is fine. A $75 cleaning fee applies if the vehicle comes back excessively dirty, for example with heavy sand, mud, pet hair, stains or trash. A $250 detailing fee applies if it needs a full interior detail, and a $250 smoking fee applies to any sign of smoking or vaping. Lost keys, key cards, charging cables or adapters are billed at the actual cost to replace and program them, plus any towing the loss makes necessary.
Changes and extensions
You can change your dates online up to 24 hours before pickup and pay or get back any price difference. Extensions depend on availability and are priced at your current rate. One-way rentals between our locations carry a one-way fee, shown before you book.
Taxes
Illinois and local rental taxes are added as the law requires and are shown before you pay.
